Service of Care and Compassion Plus
We have beautiful traditional saying, "Tha Damtse Lay Judrey and Pha Gaypa Ta Dhi Bu So," which emphasizes the importance of upholding our values and supporting one another. However, in our rapidly changing social and economic landscape, we must ask ourselves if we are truly living up to these ideals. The shift towards urbanization and the increasing recent trend of people moving out of country have led to many such values being overlooked, particularly in the context of supporting our senior citizens.
To address these challenges, the Royal Society for Senior Citizens (RSSC) and the Disabled People’s Organization of Bhutan (DPOB) have came up with a pilot project titled “Service of Care and Compassion Plus (SCCI+)” + for the community. If the project goes well we will extend to other Dzongkhags too.
Our recent pre-assessment survey revealed that many senior citizens with disabilities are left alone, and in some cases, they must care for each other, which is heartbreaking.
In response, RSSC and DPOB have established a group of youth volunteers from Paro College of Education. These volunteers will provide the following services on Saturdays and Sundays, helping to foster a sense of compassion and bridge the gap between generations, thereby strengthening multigenerational bonds:
a) Assisting disabled senior citizens with basic household chores.
b)Helping them with personal care, such as taking showers.
c) Organizing occasional outings for them.
d) Aiding them in using basic assistive devices provided through our project.
e) Offering companionship to those who feel lonely.
Additionally, the project includes provisions for building ramps for senior citizens who have toilets outside their homes and face significant challenges in accessing them
